Why does my car pull to one side?

When we are at the wheel, many behaviours of the car can occur which are invariably a symptom of a fault.

If the car pulls to one side or simply the steering wheel vibrates, there is a problem with the car's steering.

For example, if the car pulls to the right when we let go of the steering wheel, we may have a wheel alignment problem or a faulty steering component.

Why does this fault occur

  • Tyre condition.

Driving with a flat, deformed, or unevenly worn tyre causes steering problems. This must be checked by a professional and replaced urgently.

If the car only pulls to one side at high speed, it is also very likely to be a problem related to the tyres. For this reason, before travelling, it is advisable to check their condition and make sure everything is in optimal condition, as the car's response will improve, we will avoid failures and, moreover, you will get maximum fuel efficiency and less consumption.

  • Wheel alignment

Wheel misalignment is caused by accidents, minor impacts, a damaged chassis, or simply by driving on uneven roads, which damage the vehicle's shock absorbers. Poor wheel alignment causes uneven tyre wear.

Poor wheel alignment causes steering problems, such as the car pulling to the left, even without needing to go at too high a speed.

Aligning the wheels is a complex maintenance task that must be carried out by industry professionals, mechanics, in a workshop.

  • Fault in a steering system component

The steering gradually loses its settings also due to bad habits such as hitting the kerb when parking. There are several components of this system that can break down and cause problems, such as worn car brake calipers causing the car to pull to one side when braking:

- The steering wheel. To avoid steering failures, habits such as holding the steering wheel at full lock for a long time should be avoided.

- The steering box. A steering box failure causes the car to pull to one side and makes maneuvering difficult.

- Steering ball joints. Play in the steering ball joints causes a loss of steering precision.

- Power steering. If you notice that you have to make too much effort to turn the steering wheel, the power steering is experiencing some failure.

If we experience a situation such as our car pulling to the left, it is advisable to take the car to the workshop for a thorough inspection of these components. Keeping this in mind is very important for our own safety and that of others, and therefore, to achieve greater road safety.
