• Ice forms on the evaporator or the pipes.

• You will hear whistling or hissing noises.

• The compressor cycles too frequently or not enough.

It is typically replaced when a professional diagnoses it as faulty.

Additionally, its internal design is quite complex and it is generally not repairable. As a rule, it can be cleaned, but this is only a temporary fix.

It is not an especially expensive part in itself, but it is not something that can be replaced by someone without solid mechanical knowledge.
