When a car vibrates a lot, the exact cause depends on the moment the vibration appears and where it is felt inside the vehicle. When stopped (at a traffic light, at idle)

If the car shakes while stationary, with the engine at idle, the most common causes are:

  • Broken or worn engine or transmission mounts. Their function is to absorb the normal vibrations of the engine; when they fail, those vibrations are transmitted directly to the bodywork and are clearly felt inside the cabin.
  • Worn spark plugs or faulty ignition coils. When a cylinder misfires due to a worn spark plug or a defective coil, the engine loses its uniform combustion cycle and the idle becomes unstable, generating a noticeable vibration even when stationary.

Above 80 km/h (on the road)

A vibration that appears or clearly intensifies above a certain speed, usually in the steering wheel, typically indicates a wheel problem:

  • Unbalanced tyres or bent/deformed rims. A small imbalance in the wheel is barely noticeable at low speed, but is significantly amplified above 80–100 km/h.
  • Wheel misalignment or uneven tyre wear. An unbalanced alignment causes uneven wear of the tread, which over time generates constant vibration on the road.

When braking

If the vibration appears specifically when pressing the brake — usually in the steering wheel or the pedal itself — the cause is almost always in the front braking system:

  • Warped (deformed) brake discs due to overheating or prolonged use.
  • Heavily worn brake pads, which no longer press evenly against the disc.

When accelerating

A vibration that only appears when pressing the accelerator, especially if it increases with speed or is noticeable when taking a curve, usually points to the transmission of power to the wheels or the fuel system itself:

  • Damaged CV joints or driveshafts. Excessive play or a torn boot on the CV joint generates vibration and, often, a characteristic noise when turning.
  • Fuel injection problems or loss of engine power. An irregular mixture or a fault in the fuel delivery system can result in jerking and vibration under acceleration.

How to check for a broken engine mount in a simple way

One of the quickest checks to carry out in a workshop: with the car stationary and the handbrake on, engage a gear (or Drive) and release the clutch slightly without accelerating, or simply observe the engine from the open bonnet while revving in neutral. An abrupt and excessive movement of the engine block, well beyond normal rocking, is a clear sign that one of the mounts has given way.
